What you need to know

You may need time away to take care of yourself or a loved one. Our leave-of-absence programs have your back.

Types of leave

Medical leave

Dealing with a serious health condition? You can take a medical leave if it’s approved by the Costa Rican Social Security Authority (Caja Costarricense de Seguro Social – CCSS). You can also take a medical leave related to occupational hazards (Riesgos del Trabajo), like work injuries, accidents or illnesses, if it’s approved by the National Insurance Institute (Instituto Nacional de Seguros – INS).

While on an approved CCSS medical leave, you’ll be paid 50% of your salary for the first three days. After that, CCSS will pay 60% of your salary, with no additional contribution from Splunk.

While on an approved INS medical leave due to work injury or illness, INS will pay 60% of your base salary from the first day to the end of the leave, with no additional contribution from Splunk.

Maternity leave

Recovering from childbirth? Let us temporarily subtract one item from your priority list: work. If you’re a biological mother, you’re eligible to take up to four months (~120 days) of maternity leave to recover and bond with your new baby.

Your leave will begin one month (~30 days) before the birth of your child and will extend three months (~90 days) after the birth.

  • Multiple births? You’re entitled to one additional month per child.
  • Premature delivery? Your leave may be extended for the full period of four months following the birth.
  • Miscarriage or stillbirth? You’re entitled to leave time based on the gestational period.

While on maternity leave, you’ll receive 50% of your salary from Splunk. The other 50% will be paid by CCSS.

Your Splunk benefits will continue during your leave, except for any car or transportation allowances. Your vacation time will continue to accrue during your leave.

Adoption leave

Welcoming an adopted baby to your family? Adoption leave allows you to take time off to bond with your new baby.

If you’re an adopting mother or father, you get three months of paid adoption leave starting on the day after the placement of the child.

  • Adopting multiple children? You get an additional month of leave per additional adopted child.
  • Part of a working couple? Working couples have the option to take their portion of leave simultaneously or consecutively.

While on adoption leave, you’ll receive 50% of your salary from Splunk. The other 50% will be paid by CCSS.

Your Splunk benefits will continue during your leave, except for any car or transportation allowances. Your vacation time will continue to accrue during your leave.

Paternity leave

Splunk supports you and your family during one of the most important times in your life: the birth of your child. If you’re a biological father, you get two paid days of paternity leave per week during the first four weeks following the birth of your child.

While on paternity leave, you’ll receive 50% of your salary from Splunk. The other 50% will be paid by CCSS.

Your Splunk benefits will continue during your leave, including car and transportation allowances. Your vacation time will continue to accrue during your leave.

Family care time

Splunk understands the importance of caring for an ill family member.

You can take time off if you need to care for a direct family member (spouse or child) who has been diagnosed as seriously or terminally ill and if the leave is authorized by CCSS. If CCSS authorizes the time off, you’ll receive a stipend.

Military reservist days

As part of our commitment to Splunkers who serve in the military, we provide paid time off for your military reservist duty.

You get 10 days (80 hours) of paid time off for military reservist duty, including annual training requirements, to maintain readiness for military duty.

Request your military reservist time off through Workday. If your military reservist time off will exceed 10 days, submit a leave request, and attach the applicable training orders or the equivalent.

Personal leave

If you need to take time away from work for personal reasons and have no other paid leave available, you can request an unpaid personal leave of absence for up to three months.

How to apply for leave

Notify your manager of your need for a leave of absence and duration, so they can plan for business coverage.

Submit a leave request with any required documentation, which will include your leave start and end dates. While on your leave, be sure to maintain open communication with your manager about your return. When you return to work, confirm your return-to-work date through the Splunk Service Portal so the leave request can be closed.
